Makin' hats

For the past couple years I have been making hats at my friend Lynne's studio for various theatrical productions. This one below is my first hats made of strip straw. Strip straw comes in different widths, colors, and textures. This one is about 1/2 an inch wide. You start by sewing a small oval shape by hand before feeding it into the machine. Once it is in the machine you can manipulate it to make different shapes. This straw topper is for Mamma Mia! which is currently on Broadway and touring throughout the country.

Here's what it looks like from the top.

window boxes

A few weeks ago I finally broke down and bought flower boxes for the front windows of my apartment. Unfortunately the only ones that fit are the really expensive wood ones but they do look pretty! In them I planted snapdragon, creeping jenny, coleus, sweet potato vine, impatiens, alyssum, and verbena.

Copenhagen Opera Theater

While in Copenhagen I went to see Tosca at the Copenhagen Opera House. All aspects of the production were beautiful. I was really attracted to the design of the opera house itself that was full of artwork commissioned by Danish artists. Below are some lighting fixtures that were in the lobby. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of work that must have gone into these. They were created by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.

Here's what they looked like on the inside.

Custom lampshades for Hable Construction

These are lampshades that I made for the Housingworks Design on a dime event. They are for Hable Construction who designed a booth for the event. I love working with their fabrics-they are the perfect weight for lampshades and the pattern are so cute! I hope to be doing more work for them in the future.

Copenhagen

Sadly my Scandinavian trip is over. I spent most of my time in Copenhagen and Stockholm. Below are some of the pictures I took in Copenhagen. It's beautiful there. The buildings all have amazing detail to them and are in great shape. Most of the streets are cobblestone. Just about everyone there rides a bike. Outside of the main train station there was a sea of bikes-some of them not even locked up! Apparently since everyone already owns a bike there's no worry of yours being stolen.

This fountain was near the center of Copenhagen.

I felt like I was on a movie set-these buildings don't look like
anything you see here.

This picture was taken at Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli is a very old amusement park that has been open since 1843. It is unlike anything here. The grounds were beautifully manicured and decorated with all kinds of decorative lights. I love the illustration on this sign.

This picture is one of the theaters at Tivoli. Since they have more hours of daylight
there I had to wait until almost 10pm to get this shot.

Helsinki airport

It has been a rough start to my trip to Copenhagen. So far I have made it as far as Helsinki. I missed my connecting flight here which should have gotten me to my destination a couple hours ago but the upside is there is some decent shopping to be had here at the airport. There's a Marimekko store and a few design shops I have been to already. Below is a tasty treat I found in one of the shops.

Lamp in the bathroom

I know it has been ages since mt last post-not much going on here. I was browsing Apartment Therapy a few weeks ago when I came across this post about table lamps in the bathroom. I decided this is just what my bathroom needs. My bathroom is on the larger side. Except for some paint on the walls it is in serious need of decoration. Here's the results...this lamp had been on a bookcase in my hallway but wasn't getting much use. It's a vintage lamp that has been modified with vintage glass parts from various lamps. The shade is made from some left over fabric from some pillows I made.
